When students are met with teachers who encourage them to persevere or who enforce behavioral expectations, they gain useful guidance and perspective as to what constitutes normal life challenges and appropriate emotional reaction and engagement. When educators must enforce classroom expectations and behavior, they risk being questioned by students or parents because it might be “harmful” to a student’s emotional well-being. Department of Education show that in the 2021–22 school year, two-thirds of students attended a school with high or extreme levels of chronic absence. Gradual increases in school avoidance and missed class can put students further behind, exacerbate distress, and create a cycle of greater anxiety toward school. In one study, 100% of students who dropped out of school counseling did so because they would have needed to miss class and did not want to do so. Until the 1960s, the major emphasis in mental health policy was on treatment and management of individuals with mental illnesses, primarily in institutional settings.
Medical Students
This model can be especially useful for guiding of research because it explicitly acknowledges how different variables can play a crucial part at specific points in the implementation process. The EPIS model (exploration, preparation, implementation, sustainability)123 identifies different implementation phases and aspects of the outer and inner context that are salient at different phases. The models to improve implementation are complex and multitiered, but manageable when systematic approaches are taken.122,123
Commonalities within the global manuals and guidelines
Factors such as stigma, shortages of qualified mental health professionals, and fragmented service delivery models contribute to the current mental health treatment gap (Wainberg et al., 2017). For example, in a systematic review by Reiss (2013), nearly all the international studies included in the review (52/55) revealed an inverse association between at least one marker of socioeconomic status and mental health problems. Further, there has been a clear escalation in suicide attempts by Black youth, with rates rising faster than that of any other racial/ethnic group, and Black children under the age of 13 being twice as likely to die by suicide than White youth even before the pandemic (Emergency Taskforce on Black Youth Suicide and Mental Health, 2019; Lindsey et al., 2019).

The symptoms of depression can cause disturbances with interpersonal, social, and occupational functioning.
