Food impacts our feelings and moods! As an organisation that supports people from across Australia, Beyond Blue acknowledges the Traditional Owners and Custodians of Country and their continuing connection to land, waters and community. Your mental health is important, as important as your physical health, so make sure you look after yourself and talk about it. Losing a loved one or getting into debt can suddenly impact your mental health.

  • Current or historic events such as systemic racism or discrimination based on race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, socioeconomic status, religion, or cultural background can have significant impact on emotional wellbeing.

  • As the pandemic subsided, post-COVID mental health challenges emerged, with many experiencing what is termed “pandemic fatigue,” chronic stress, exhaustion, and emotional burnout.

  • Embracing these changes with a positive mindset can transform them into opportunities for growth.

Mental health conditions

Strong emotional well-being means you’re prepared to face events that may or may not be in your control. It makes sense that your stories reflect what you’re feeling about yourself, your health, and how you relate to others. And there is an emerging set of data that is focusing on the effects of positive well-being. Many research studies focus on how poor mental well-being negatively impacts physical health — leading to an increased risk in cancer, heart disease, and respiratory disease. That means more energy, awareness, and a healthier outlook on life. That helps determine the actions you take and completely changes the way you handle stressful situations and make decisions.

Do specific positive emotions predict previously described aspects of well-being (e.g., environmental mastery or positive relations)? For example, findings from a study using a measure of life satisfaction may not necessarily overlap with findings from a study using a measure of meaning in life or positive emotion even though all have been considered as tapping into aspects of psychological well-being. The definition explicitly recognizes that although EWB itself may be a state of overall positive well-being, such states inevitably include and can occur in the context of experiencing negative feelings like sadness.

It’s now one of the most reliable ways I protect my mental clarity — especially in a role where I’m constantly filtering, editing, and refining others’ ideas. Now I do it daily — usually midday when I feel the fog setting in. That first walk cleared more mental clutter than any productivity hack I’d tried. It started as a small habit during a particularly stressful period when deadlines piled up and my focus was slipping. In my own practice and with my patients, I now pair these somatic tools with traditional therapy and even ketamine-assisted work.

Community programs that encourage social interactions, such as support groups, peer mentoring, and group activities, help individuals build meaningful connections, combat isolation, and share experiences. Social support and community engagement are essential for maintaining mental well-being and fostering resilience. These strategies help build resilience by enabling individuals to identify stressors, develop constructive responses, and maintain a balanced perspective during difficult situations. Teaching additional coping strategies, University of Delaware Mental Wellbeing Program such as problem-solving skills and emotional regulation techniques, further empowers individuals to navigate life’s challenges.

Mindfulness can help you enjoy life more and understand yourself better. Some people call this awareness “mindfulness”. It could be small acts of kindness towards other people, or larger ones like volunteering in your local community.
